January 28, 2010: The Clarity of Lucite

In Celerie Kemble, lucite, Thad Hayes on January 28, 2010 at 1:01 am

By Denise. Yesterday Lynn was craving warmer climes and spring flowers.  Me too.  I am also looking forward to spring fashion.  Much lucite was featured on the spring runways and the fashion magazines forecast its resurgence.  The allure of lucite (aka acrylic or plexiglass or polycarbonate) is that it takes up little “visual” space and it works with just about anything.  It’s there but it can disappear if you blur your eyes.  It imparts a glamourous vibe due to its mysteriousness and subtle glimmer, I think.  Look at this Michael Kors necklace for Spring 2010.  The enormous beads make it bold, yet it is subtle because it is clear and barely there.

I’ve always loved canopy beds but they don’t work unless you have extra high ceilings.  This lucite canopy bed retains its grandeur but does not break up the visual space.

The console and coffee table below corral magazines purposefully without looking like storage.

This cool lucite chair that Thad Hayes used is nearly invisible against the mirrored vanity.  I had to look twice.

The Louis Ghost Chair is a classic that will never go out of style.

Here is that “barely there” but bold quality again.  The coffee table in the living room of fashion designer Johnson Hartig is huge but doesn’t take over the room.

I like how Celerie Kemble juxtaposes the synthetic lucite chair with the organic desk.

Do you see the lamp?

So much light streams through this nursery.  The clear console and chair back do not obstruct the view.  What a lucky baby!

For the ultimate use of lucite in the glamourous home – balusters.  The varying texture of the balusters increase their presence but still the stair rail appears to float.

Love, love, love lucite!  How about you?
